Intro Post

@KoniecznyN

Hello! My name is Nicholas Konieczny and I will be a new student in your class starting on Wednesday Jan 28th. To be perfectly honest, I’m taking this class because it was the only production track class that I could add to stay on track for May graduation, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not interested in the subject matter.

Being and older student (I’m 30) I can still remember the world before the internet and before the ubiquity of mobile media. I watched the beginnings of cell phone culture emerge. I remember dial up! I remember AOL! I remember when no one thought text messaging would catch on, when people would actually say “I hate texting, just call me!”. Watching how all these things progressed to where we are now, it starts to become easier to see where the trends are headed. We are quickly becoming a global culture linked together through our cell phones and other mobile platforms. Everyday I communicate with people from across the globe on my cell phone whether through tweets, web forums, image boards, or direct messaging. It’s a tremendously fascinating thing to be linked like this considering that in my freshman year of high school almost no one had a regular old “Zack Morris-y” style cell phone, let alone the fancy touch screen pocket computers we call cell phones today. I never thought I’d be able to ask someone in Germany, or Denmark, or wherever in the English speaking world about their preferred method for mic-ing a snare drum while sitting on the toilet at work. Or to be able to stream the complete run of Twin Peaks while making my daily train commutes. It really still astounds me every day what we’re capable of today with our tablets and cell phones… Jesus, I’m starting to talk like an old man…

As far as what I hope to get out of this class, well, I’d be lying if I didn’t say my degree in May, but also I’d just like to get maybe a wider perspective on where we’re headed as a mobile society. What the future of human interaction will look like, for good or bad, as we progress down this path. Really, all this tech is super new, like I said, I was a teenager in the age of dial up and AOL, so just thinking about the possibilities of where we’re headed is really mind bending. To me, it already feels like were living in a William Gibson novel at this point.

But with all this talk about the future of mobile media and where we’re heading with it, I still feel like the peak of mobile tech (to me at least) was around 2002 when this Nokia was the single greatest cell phone ever made. I had one of these fall out of my pocket on The Great American Scream Machine in the early oughts and survive the fall with nothing but a small crack. No fancy pants iPhone or Galaxy Note is going to do that! Plus it came pre-loaded with the best mobile game ever — Snake.

My name is Isaiah Gaymon, but everyone calls me Izzy.  I love music.  It’s probably one of my favorite things in the world. It has so much meaning to me. I also do some singing in my spare time.  I enjoy watching basketball, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with friends. That’s just a few of the many things I enjoy though. I’m interested in this Mobile Media course because I’ve always been fascinated by the ability and quick advancements of technology. It still amazes me. I hope that I can get a better understanding of the history of mobile media and a better understanding of how things work.

My dream is to work for GQ Magazine one day. I feel like it’s coming very soon. It’s something I can see myself being included in at some point in my life.

Some of the other things I enjoy are music covers on youtube.  Hearing other people’s interpretation of an artist song is cool and interesting to me. I do it much too often and I always share them on my Facebook account as well. Some of the covers contribute to my own creative style of singing.

That’s just a little about me, but I’m a fun person t be around and I’m always open to meet new people and see new things.  I currently am a Marketing/Production intern at DreamNationTV.  I just started and I know it’ll be great.  I believe it will allow me to show off my creative side and contribute some great ideas to the company.  What I enjoy most about the company is that I get to be creative and give ideas. It’s always a great thing to know that you have the freedom to be as creative as you’d like in life.  This is my canvass. Im gonna paint it how I want to paint it.

Conor’s Intro

Howdy, howdy, howdy,

I’m Conor. I like visual media an awful lot.

Well, that just about sums me up, but I am at this time, far from the 300 word count. I would have hyphenated that but, you know: more spaces, more words, more money. Or no money. Wait, no. Hyphen still counts as a space. That’s fine too. Right! Media! Mobile Media. Alright. Here we go. I usually enjoy discussing media theories in a general but because this course is more centered around the emerging mobile media and emergent technology, I expect the discussion to be increasingly relevant to our everyday lives. It interests me that we go about our daily lives with such immense social and commuting power in our pockets, yet we rarely stop to think about the impact it is currently having and will have in years to come. We live in a pivotal time concerning the way information works and travels and what I hope is that somehow I can, with the help of this course, find a way to better wrap my head around this fact and more aptly find ways to discuss it. For the course of the semester I hope to meet like-minded people that want just as much to discuss these matters and also people that just as much enjoy things like this. See? Like-minded.

Anything else you’d want to know? I suppose I’ll go through what I’ve been up to recently, media-wise. I’m a gamer and though I don’t play on any technically mobile platforms, it’s all connected. Recently I’ve spent a more than decent amount of time playing Shadow of Mordor. If anyone’s into that, I suppose. Just watched Gone Girl and damn, that is quite the movie. I was not prepared at all for the psychological thriller that followed hitting “play.” If you like that, watch “Side Effects,” with Jude Law. Cut of the same cloth.

And for music and that sort of media, I’ve been on a real Sia kick recently so I’ll leave you with this.

Intro Post

I’m one of the late ones unfortunately, and I hope that I’m doing this correctly. I might even be typing this to myself. But whatever the case may be, let me introduce myself to whoever may stumble upon this. My name is Marcus Perez-Rocha Yeich, but you can call me whatever you wish and I’ll have a smile stapled to my face either way. I’m a senior in the MSP track, and am a true and total idiot when it comes to technology and interfaces entirely. That may be ironic being in the field these days, but once I get something down its hard to get me off of the ball. Its hard to keep track with new trending technologies that are constantly emerging just when I start to get comfortable with the old one. So I hope that this class will teach me to keep with the times. My hobbies are video games, soccer, swimming and anything 1017 Brick Squad. My main hobby is being a ner of nerds with everything manga and anime, I keep up to date with all of the popular manga and subtitled shows right when they are released in Japan, and probably know more than the average Otaku. Naruto is my favorite. I’m bummed out about the manga being over. Sad face.

Hopefully when I graduate, I can become a script writer for a cartoon or a video game, since I’m pretty much a child in a grown man’s body. So I’m going to aim at getting an in with Cartoon Network. I feel like I would have a lot to contribute and would fit perfectly there more than anywhere else.  Its been getting kind of trippy there lately, and I can dig that. But hey, Ill take what I can get in the meantime.

I’m a “glass is half full” kind of gal, and try to look at all situations as positively as I can. Id say that my biggest downfall is that I’m a pro at crastination. That, and I’m too nice of a person. But I can and will contribute to anything that I must with all of my presence when I buckle down. I can be can be your best friend easily and your worst enemy impossibly. But that’s pretty much me in a nutshell.

Intro Post -ZH

Hey all readers this is Zach Hughes, I’m senior and since this is not my first time taking Dr. Shaw’s class I’ll use the same twitter I did for the last class, @TU_Z2. I took this class because after a number of years in the media school I too have come to the realization that the next frontier in the information age is mobile media. I’m also aware that growing pains will come within this realm like the development of the all the mediums before it. I intend to learn the history of mobile media, the present, and the future of mobile media so we can predict what follows. I intend to learn these and whatever pleasant and unpleasant surprises we learn about mobile media along the way.

As for me personally, I’m a Philly transplant; I’ve spent half my life here, and half my life in The Bronx, New York.

I’ll be graduating in the fall God willing and I intend to start small working at a video, radio, film, or music production company and eventually move on and build my own production company. I’m a sports and music junkie; I love Hip-Hop, R&B, and I’m trying to get into art. I used to operate heavy on Twitter but unfortunately I had to delete it and start from scratch. My personal Twitter is @ValidZach. I love memes as well. One of the funniest new age past times for me when I’m not out is to “watch” events with Twitter and laugh at the people I follow’s reactions. I hope to build and network with whoever wants to, I’m hoping there’s a coder or two in the class as well so when we get to the app design segment we can see some of these apps possibly come to life.

Hello classmates! Follow me on my newest twitter account: thefakekayfeel

I’m excited to be taking this class because I think knowledge of mobile media is increasingly essential as a communications major. I believe having knowledge of mobile platforms and possible knowledge of app development is going to be really important when I graduate this year and am looking for a job. I think that the more education and experience I have working with digital technology and multimedia platforms, the better, in terms of hopefully giving me a leg Karen from mean girls eyerollup on my job competition in the marketing, communications, telecommunications/media, and advertising worlds.

That is why I am taking Mobile Media. It is my first class at the Center City location. I’m also doing it for the memes. My favorite meme to incorporate is Amanda Seyfried, as Karen from Mean Girls, rolling her eyes.

I am taking Information Society and Media and Children this semester which I think, and am already seeing, relate to this class a lot. I’m also taking two other classes and interning in the city this semester. I’m still not sure if I will be graduating in May or July.

I would like to learn more general knowledge about apps and the business uses of them, if possible. I also think learning about connectivity and how children interact with media (like my nephew and his attachment to his iPad) is fascinating. I think one day I would really like to work at Viacom or Nickelodeon, or work in marketing/branding for some other big company.

As far as things I want the class to know about myself…. I love The Walking Dead, so if you do too- we are already friends. I also love Ed Sheeran and burritos. Here’s a link to a joke youtube video starring Ed Sheeran messing around on the guitar from 2011. (Warning for explicit language).

I don’t have any pets (except fish) but I take a lot of pictures of my friend’s cats and dogs and pretend they are my own pets too. I am also left-handed.

2. This class is interesting due to the powerful relationship  between mobile technology and society. Mobile Media represents a very potent use of technology by society. Society is able to determine our relationship with technology by the use of government and authority. We are constantly seeing privacy infringements and hacks on major companies. Facebook forces users to use their real name to protect themselves from the Law. People under a restraining order are being thrown in jail due to liking an Instagram. As advancements in technology continue, a greater authority will be imposed onto how we use technology.

“The government’s health insurance website is quietly sending consumers’ personal data to private companies that specialize in advertising and analyzing Internet data for performance and marketing, The Associated Press has learned.

The scope of what is disclosed or how it might be used was not immediately clear, but it can include age, income, ZIP code, whether a person smokes, and if a person is pregnant. It can include a computer’s Internet address, which can identify a person’s name or address when combined with other information collected by sophisticated online marketing or advertising firms.

The Obama administration says HealthCare.gov’s connections to data firms were intended to help improve the consumer experience. Officials said outside firms are barred from using the data to further their own business interests.”

Technology is able to determine our relationship with society and cultural values. The impact that new technology has on society has always fascinated me because every couple months mobile technology goes through massive changes.

Technology and society are intertwined with each other and I hope to get a better understanding of the combined concepts. By understanding the concepts of mobile media the use of these communication tools will be enhanced. My current abilities using mobile media is severely lacking, and I feel that it is important to use these tools to be successful in society today.

As a fledgling media activist, the topics in our Mobile Media class greatly interest me.  In contrast to many other academic fields, media analysis can only be properly explored when the most up-to-date information is being used, and it seems like this class is going to do exactly that.  It’s exciting that the course will address issues concerning surveillance, privacy, intellectual property, and the ways in which mobile communications technology has shaped our society.

Throughout the course of this semester, I hope to learn in depth about all of these topics and gain the tools to become a better media consumer, producer, and educator.  I am intimidated by some of the topics and assignments ahead, but know that the challenge will result in intellectual and experiential growth.  I hope to come across issues and ideas of which I had previously never heard, and look forward to integrating new knowledge into my professional and activist arsenal.

Last summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the annual Allied Media Conference in Detroit.  The AMC is a national gathering of media makers and activists seeking to collaborate and teach each other while providing a safe space for underrepresented individuals to express themselves through media.  With a small group of other media and comm. tech activists, I helped plan, organize, and execute the Really Rad Radio & TV Station, a popup broadcast studio and practice space that ran throughout the three-day conference.  I worked on social media presence for the group as my colleagues taught workshops, facilitated live shows, and set up a pirate “test” radio station.  I was able to participate in a number of other workshops and sessions throughout the conference, ranging from printmaking basics to a film screening about Detroit civil rights activist Grace Lee Boggs.  I had never heard of her before attending AMC, but she has become one of my heroes.  Find out why:

Introductory Post

Hi all! I’m Meagan Kaman or @mjaekay on Twitter. I am a senior Film and Media Arts major (concentrating in screenwriting) and Digital Media Technologies minor. I am taking this class at the same time as Mobile Computing in the Computer Science department. In this class we are working on programming for web and mobile media.  I am very interested to see how this class and Mobile Computing complement each other.

In this class I am excited to explore why we make and consume the media we do and what the implications of that media. I think that it will be a good complement to take the critical approach we engage in here and see how it applies to the media that I am (and my classmates are) making in Mobile Computing. I am very excited that we are taking a social justice standpoint as it is something that is very important to me.

I hope that by the end of this class I will have a good understanding of how social justice and mobile media interact. I hope that I will be able to apply what I learn about social justice in mobile media to the media I go on to make.

This is especially as mobile and social media become more and more ubiquitous. I was particularly struck by this fact today when I opened the Guardian on my phone and saw The State of the Union in EMOJIS.

The text of President Obama's 2015 State of the Union in Emoji

I’m not sure exactly when emojis became so ever present, but I was somewhat surprised (and delighted, I won’t lie). I think it speaks to the power of mobile media though, that the Guardian (which broke the Snowden story) has decided to take the time to have someone from their staff “live-emoji” (an upcoming cousin of the “live-tweet”?) the State of the Union.

While I’m on the topic of emojis (and by extension iPhones and Apple) and generally being trendy, I leave you with your moment of zen (okay it’s Colbert not Stewart).

Introduction Post

Hello Everyone!

My lovely parents named me Dwayne Hayes Jr. I am in my last semester at Temple University in the production track of MSP.  I will be also graduating with a minor in digital media technology. I am studying to become an audio engineer with dreams of owning my own studio.  Currently, I am in the last class of the digital media technology class in which students create their own mobile app. This course interested me because it can help me build my app and understand how mobile media can help with my audio engineering career. I have dreams of building a community of media practitioners and I think this class will only assist that dream. This video featuring CoolHandDuke was shot and produced through our community last year!

Mobile media allowed me to capture this picture from the video above.

Pano BTS shot
Pano BTS shot

While in this course I want to learn how to harness the power of mobile media to create a community. Mobile media allows people to feel apart of something through the 24/7 news and media cycle that has developed through social media. Mobile devices are no longer just phones, they have grown to tablets, and very soon wearable technology. This accessibility will only add to the mobile media frenzy we live in. I’d like to understand what our culture loves about mobile media and use it to develop a community for the non professional media creators.

Audio engineering is what I love to do. I enjoy every process of engineering audio, recording, mixing, and mastering. Over the summer I interned through Temple Study Away in California as an assistant engineer and currently work for WHIP radio as a broadcast engineer. This semester I am looking to get involved with Bell Tower Music and put the newly renovated Studio G Austin spoke about to use. My twitter handle is @ze_Lynwood. Game of Thrones is my favorite television show.
